FAQs About Gieske’s Fabricated Custom Metal Projects
What finishes are available?
We offer a variety of finishes to give your product the final aesthetic you desire. We can add finishes such as brushed, mirrored, or angel hair. Whether by hand, or using grinders, sanders, or buffing wheels, we’ll use the right technique to achieve the appropriate finish.
- A brushed finish gives the metal a matte satin-like appearance with fine lines running along the surface. It is a popular finish because its appearance is subtle and modern.
- Angel hair finish is more subtle than a brushed finish. It has the appearance of ultra-fine, delicate lines that give the surface a soft, hazy look.
- Adding a mirrored finish involves carefully polishing the surface to make it highly reflective, like a mirror. We use buffing wheels and special polishing compounds to achieve this look.
How does weather affect metal finishes?
If your custom metal project will be installed outside, exposure to the elements must be considered. Many metals will patina or rust over time:
- Steel is a very common metal to work with, but we all know steel rusts when exposed to the elements. Rust can be prevented by applying a protective coating, such as paint, powder coating, or galvanization. Sometimes rust is preferred, as it does add a unique aesthetic that may be part of the design.
- Copper forms a distinct greenish patina over time when exposed to the elements. This appearance has traditionally been very popular, especially in outdoor art installations or architectural elements.
- Brass is more resistant to corrosion than steel, but it can still tarnish and degrade over time. It can develop a darkened appearance or a greenish color similar to that of weathered copper.
At Gieske, we work with a variety of metals and fully understand how each one is affected by the elements. We’ll walk you through the options to ensure the final product is durable and has the right long-term appearance.
Can you fabricate large-scale projects?
Large-scale projects are something we specialize in. Gieske has created various custom metal projects that are very extensive, especially for commercial spaces or public art installations.
Some examples of large-scale projects include extensive metal platforms with staircases, exterior features on commercial buildings, or equipment used in industrial plant settings.
How is pricing determined?
Our pricing is based on various factors such as complexity, materials used, and the time needed for designing, fabricating, and installing the final product. We have a policy of full pricing transparency and will provide detailed quotes before starting any work.
